The Tidewater Cello Ensemble The Tidewater Cello Ensemble is comprised of advanced cello students ages 11-18. Solo Youth Recital Mary Reins, soprano & Suzanne Daniel, piano Mary Reins is a graduate of Princes Anne HS and the Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) in Norfolk. She is a rising sophomore at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Mary will sing songs in six different languages (Chinese, Russian, Korean, English, French, and German.) Music will include Strauss and Bellini opera arias, Rachmaninoff Romances, French songs by Poulenc and Debussy, American pieces by Beach and Barber, and Chinese and Korean songs. Music will span the early 19th century through the 21st century. Mary was selected to give a full recital based on her performance at the 2024 Terrific Teen Talent Recital. Sundays at Four will present a free Flute Master Class Saturday, May 3rd from 10AM – 3PM with a free lunch at noon for participants. It is open to students at any level but they are required to prepare two pieces to work on with the instructor during the 25 minute lesson with Kathleen Winters. Urban Classical Jazz
The Music of Ed Bland
A much-anticipated classical jazz program was designed by Joseph Vaz, grandson of Atwill and the late Doris Gwaltney with a grant from Smithfield Events. Pianist, Joseph Vaz is a music doctoral student at the CUNY Graduate Center in NY City who will bring with him an ensemble of New York professionals, cellist, Audrey Chen; flutist, Rebecca Moranis, and world famous clarinetist, Charles Neidich, to perform pieces by the late husband of Smithfield native and author, Mary Batten Bland. Mr. Bland, a Chicago Jazz artist later became a composer who refined his musical style through the fusion of early 20th century Western European music culture with the juxtaposition of traditional African-American jazz, gospel roots, and complex rhythmic patterns of West Africa drumming.
In addition to the works by Mr. Bland the ensemble will also feature:
The Nearly Waltz of Nikolai Kapustin and The Sonata for Clarinet & Piano by Aaron Copland

The Diehn Chorale
The F. Ludwig Diehn Chorale is a twenty voice select ensemble that performs a variety of music from chamber works to jazz. This ensemble is made up of Diehn Scholars and University Concert Choir Scholarship recipients who have demonstrated the highest levels of talent, commitment and energy. They are much sought after as performers of small ensemble literature and premiered selected works of Adolphus Hailstork, James Kosnik, Joseph Kasper and Rich Moriarty.

The Wren Masters
Now in their 19th season, the Wren masters will present a concert of Baroque music performed on recorder, baroque violin, viol da gamba and harpsichord. The program includes music by Telemann, Marin Marais, the viola da gamba player at the court of Louis XIV, and by the organ virtuoso Dieterich Buxtehude. The program also includes a trio sonata that Bach liked so much he wrote it in at least three different versions;
they will perform each of the four movements in a different configuration, fitting each of Bach’s reworkings of the piece.
This project is supported in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, which receives support from the Virginia General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts

The Washington Sax Quartet
For more than 40 years, the Washington Sax Quartet has been the most-heard saxophone quartet in America. Their instruments evoke the refined sounds of a string quartet, the rich harmonies of an organ, and the excitement of a jazz sax section. The ensemble taps into a rich repertoire, from early music to newly commissioned works, and draws on a wealth of experience to reach listeners of every age and background.
This performance will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church at 201 Cedar Street in Smithfield.

The Botetourt Chamber Singers
The Botetourt Chamber singers is a touring group performing regularly around Williamsburg at many popular events. The Bots will make their second appearance on the Sundays at Four series, and in 2020, the singers will travel to Japan and South Korea. The ensemble will sing a variety of choral literature from the Renaissance to contemporary works, including Jazz and Broadway. Bring the entire family!

The Wren Masters, an early music quartet from Williamsburg, will present an afternoon of chamber music from the 17th century for harpsichord, strings, and recorder. Composers will include Dowland, Holborne, and Byrd from England; and Castello, Turini, and Frescobaldi.

Ms. Shewmaker is a graduate of Smithfield High School, and the Governor’s School for the Arts. Leah is now a senior majoring in vocal performance at James Madison University where she has sung opera roles in Dead Man Walking, Così fan Tutte, The Mikado, The Medium, and others. She will present a recital of artsongs, opera arias, and Broadway songs. A free-will contribution will be taken to support this young artist.
